Know the tool

Maplewoodshop identification photograph of clear eye protection with orange arms.

Your goal: Show the class start-and-stop routine and explain when to ask for help.

Eye protection is part of the setup. A tool picture or a written answer cannot show that your station is ready; your instructor checks the actual equipment and your demonstration.

Identify your eye protection, the approved workholding, the clear working area, and the place to return tools.

Watch and prepare

At your station

  • Class-approved eye protection and any hearing or dust protection required for the activity.
  • The actual tool, workbench, and practice material selected by the instructor.

Demonstration and setup

  • Watch the instructor demonstrate the class stop signal, safe tool carrying/placement, and how to secure the practice material.
  • Wear eye protection. Tie back long hair, remove dangling jewelry, and secure loose clothing. Keep the floor and bench clear.
  • Use a tool only after instruction and permission, for its intended task. Report damage, discomfort, and injuries immediately.

Practice

Start after the demonstration and the instructor's setup check. Stop and ask for help if the work moves or the tool does not behave as demonstrated.

  1. Check yourself.

Put on the required protection and secure hair and clothing. Tell the instructor if the protection does not fit or makes it hard to see.

  2. Check the station.

Inspect the material and tool with the instructor. Secure the work using the demonstrated vise or workstation. Identify cutting edges, sharp points, pinch areas, and the tool's travel path.

  3. Rehearse stopping.

With the tool at rest, show where your hands will stay. Respond to the stop signal by stopping movement and placing the tool as demonstrated. Ask for help if the work moves or the tool jams.

  4. Reset for the next person.

Return tools and secure sharp edges/points as directed. Clear scraps and dust using the class method, store the sample, and leave the station ready for inspection.

Show your skill

Show the instructor these observable results before using the skill in a project:

  • Protection fits, and hair/clothing and the working space are ready.
  • The material stays secured and hands stay clear of the demonstrated tool path.
  • You can stop, set the tool down, and ask for help without improvising a repair.

Check your understanding

Your scrap shifts during a practice stroke. What is your next action?

Reveal the explanation

Stop the tool, keep clear of its edge or point, and ask the instructor to help reset the workholding. Continue only after the setup has been checked again.

Answer aloud or on paper, then compare with the explanation.

Use the skill

Use the skill again at the next instructor-approved practice station.
