Know the tool

Your goal: Make and independently check two measured marks without confusing inches and centimeters.
Find the hook, blade, case, and lock. The blade is the numbered strip. Read the scale your class is using; one tape can show more than one system of units.
Identify the zero/reference end, the whole-unit numbers, and the smaller divisions between them.
Watch and prepare
At your station
- A tape measure, pencil, and supported scrap long enough for the practice marks.
- An instructor-checked ruler for an independent check; no cutting in this lesson.
Demonstration and setup
- Watch the instructor seat the hook on a sound reference end, keep the blade straight, and read it from above.
- Identify the actual smallest divisions before using them. Learn the lock and controlled retraction; keep fingers clear of the blade edges and hook.
- Practice measurements are layout examples, not a cut list. Use the same reference end for both marks.
Practice
Start after the demonstration and the instructor's setup check. Stop and ask for help if the work moves or the tool does not behave as demonstrated.
Choose the reference.
Rest the scrap as demonstrated. Point to the end that will represent zero. Seat the hook fully on that end and extend the blade along the length without twisting it.
Read before marking.
Find 2 inches, then the halfway mark between 2 and 3 inches. Say 'two and one-half inches' and show the instructor which division you read.
Make two V marks.
Mark 2½ inches and 4 inches from the same end. Put the point of each small V exactly at the required position. Label the units; keep the marks narrow.
Check and retract.
Lift and reseat the hook, then measure each mark again. Compare with the checked ruler. Resolve any mismatch before returning the blade slowly under control.
Show your skill
Show the instructor these observable results before using the skill in a project:
- Both marks use the same sound reference end and the same unit scale.
- The V points are at 2½ inches and 4 inches when checked independently.
- You control the blade's return and keep its edges away from fingers.
Check your understanding
The first mark is 2½ inches from zero and the second is 4 inches from zero. How far apart are they?
Reveal the explanation
They are 1½ inches apart: 4 − 2½ = 1½. The second mark is still 4 inches from the original reference end.
Answer aloud or on paper, then compare with the explanation.
