The workspace opens in a new tab so you can keep these directions beside it. Use a laptop or desktop with a mouse or trackpad. The editor has a large first download, about 26 MB before server compression.

Save before leaving. Use File → Save or Ctrl+S to save a DXF drawing to your device. No account is needed. There is no classroom submission or cloud-save service here. Reopen your saved file to check it.

Plan a 4 m × 3 m room

Your goal: draw the room outline, add a 120 cm × 60 cm desk, and label the room's width and height. For this activity, one drawing unit represents one centimetre. Coordinates are written as #x,y. The # makes each position absolute: measured from the drawing's origin, not from the last point.

  1. Draw the room.

In CADCraft, click the command box at the bottom. Type each line below and press Enter after each line. Start from the blank Drawing1 tab.

    RECTANG
    #0,0
    #400,300

The first corner is the origin. The opposite corner is 400 cm across and 300 cm up.

  2. Fit the drawing on screen.

Enter these two lines in the same command box:

    ZOOM
    E

E means extents: show the whole drawing.

  3. Add the desk.

Enter another rectangle using these corners:

    RECTANG
    #250,180
    #370,240

    Check its size: 370 − 250 = 120 cm wide and 240 − 180 = 60 cm deep.

  4. Add two measurements.

Enter these lines. The first settings make the labels readable and show whole numbers; the remaining lines dimension the bottom and left edges. Then use ZOOM, Enter, E, Enter again.

    DIMSCALE
    50
    DIMDEC
    0
    DIMLINEAR
    #0,0
    #400,0
    #200,-40
    DIMLINEAR
    #0,0
    #0,300
    #-40,150

The labels should read 400 and 300. Those values are centimetres in this activity.

  5. Save and reopen.

Press Ctrl+S or choose File → Save. Save as room-plan.dxf. Open a fresh CADCraft tab from this page, choose File → Open or Ctrl+O, and select that file. Check the room, desk and both dimensions.

Check your work

  • The reopened file contains the room, desk and dimensions.
  • The room measures 400 cm × 300 cm and the desk stays inside it.
  • Explain why the room's floor area is 12 m², rather than 120,000 m².

Try one more: add a second desk without overlapping the first. Leave space for someone to walk between them.

If you get stuck

Press Escape twice to cancel a command, then click the command box again. Ctrl+Z undoes a step. Use ZOOM then E if the drawing disappears from view. Start this activity in a blank drawing rather than importing an important CAD file: unsupported imported objects may not survive saving.

If your device blocks WebGL or the workspace does not load, try another supported browser or ask your teacher for a classroom computer. A phone is suitable for reading these directions; use a larger screen for drawing.
