Know the tool

Maplewoodshop photograph of a small block plane with a brass front knob and metal sole.

Your goal: Control a teacher-set plane through a light pass while keeping the sole supported.

A block plane has a flat sole and a blade that projects slightly through an opening in that sole. The instructor sets and checks the blade for this introductory exercise.

Identify the sole, front grip, rear grip area, and blade opening. Keep hands away from the blade and the opening underneath.

Watch and prepare

At your station

  • An instructor-inspected and adjusted block plane, straight-grained scrap, and eye protection.
  • An approved workholding arrangement that leaves the full pass clear.

Demonstration and setup

  • Watch the instructor select the grain direction, secure the sample, and demonstrate front/rear hand pressure during a pass.
  • Use the front and rear grip areas demonstrated on the actual plane. Keep fingers clear of the blade and the opening under the sole.
  • Do not remove or adjust the blade in this lesson. Stop for binding, chatter, or a plane that requires force.

Practice

Start after the demonstration and the instructor's setup check. Stop and ask for help if the work moves or the tool does not behave as demonstrated.

  1. Inspect the setup.

Check the grain and target surface with the instructor. Secure the sample so it cannot slide along the direction of the pass.

  2. Set your grip.

Place hands on the demonstrated grip areas. Rest the sole at the beginning of the work, with fingers clear of the blade path.

  3. Take a light pass.

Push smoothly in the demonstrated direction while keeping the sole level and supported. Let the set blade take a light shaving; do not force a heavy cut.

  4. Inspect and return.

Set the plane down in the approved edge-protecting position. Examine the shaving and surface, then ask whether another pass is needed.

Show your skill

Show the instructor these observable results before using the skill in a project:

  • The sample stays secure and the hands remain on safe grip areas.
  • The plane travels with control and produces a light shaving on the prepared sample.
  • You stop for adjustment instead of forcing the plane through a problem.

Check your understanding

If the plane digs in and will not move with a light controlled push, what should you do?

Reveal the explanation

Stop and ask the instructor to check the grain, support, blade condition, and setting. Extra force does not correct a poor setup.

Answer aloud or on paper, then compare with the explanation.

Use the skill

Use the skill again at the next instructor-approved practice station.
