Know the tool

Your goal: Cut a straight strip and a broad curve while keeping the supporting hand clear.
Scissors use two blades moving past each other. Match the scissors to the material; this lesson uses paper, not wood, metal, or thick stock.
Identify the handles, pivot, cutting edges, and tips. Keep track of the supporting hand as the cut advances.
Watch and prepare
At your station
- Teacher-approved scissors, paper with a straight line and broad curve, and a clear work surface.
- Use a paper practice sample before trimming project materials such as abrasive paper.
Demonstration and setup
- Watch the instructor demonstrate grip, supporting-hand placement, controlled passes, and safe carrying or passing.
- Keep the supporting hand outside the approaching blades and tips; reposition the paper before that clearance is lost.
- Close the blades when setting the scissors down. Stop if the material requires force or the blades bind.
Practice
Start after the demonstration and the instructor's setup check. Stop and ask for help if the work moves or the tool does not behave as demonstrated.
Plan the strip.
Identify the line and waste side on the supported paper. Hold the scissors and paper in the demonstrated positions.
Cut with control.
Use steady, controlled passes along the straight line. Watch ahead and keep the supporting fingers away from the approaching cut.
Follow the curve.
Reposition the paper as demonstrated to follow the broad curve. Do not twist or force the scissors through a sharp turn.
Inspect and reset.
Compare both cuts with their marks. Close and return the scissors, then collect the offcuts without reaching across another person's blades.
Show your skill
Show the instructor these observable results before using the skill in a project:
- The cut follows the intended side of the line without tearing the paper.
- Your supporting hand stays clear as you reposition the material.
- You choose suitable material and put the scissors down closed.
Check your understanding
What should you do if the scissors need excessive force to cut the material?
Reveal the explanation
Stop and ask the instructor to check the material and scissors. Use a tool suited to the job rather than forcing the blades.
Answer aloud or on paper, then compare with the explanation.
Use the skill
Apply it in a project
